The Typo.Graphicæ research group: practice, theory and history has the mission of reinforcing the culture of research in typography, strengthening this sub-area in the design education and conciliating the three main aspects of the university’s mission – Research, Teaching and Society.
It intends to affirm research in typography, lettering, and calligraphy, in all media, scales and time of production, seeking to understand and explore its conditioning factors, on the one hand, and to explore its multiple implications, on the other.

Its strong objective is the dissemination of knowledge, and it will seek to establish/ strengthen multidisciplinary collaborative networks, promote innovation in teaching/learning processes and foster fruitful links with society.

Objectives

The research group Typo.Graphicæ has as general objectives:
› To deepen knowledge on typography, reflecting critically on practice, theory and history;
› To research typography, lettering and calligraphy as foundational and transversal knowledge in design, in its multiple declinations: research (pure and applied), teaching and professional practice of graphic and communication design;
› To deepen the relations between these areas of study and the technology inherent to them;
› To promote studies on typography, lettering, and calligraphy, crossing several disciplinary territories (sociology, cognitive psychology, psychology of learning, anthropology, philosophy of knowledge, architecture, linguistics, semiology, poetry, literature, multimedia, palaeography, epigraphy, archaeology, culture studies, computer science, neurosciences, etc.) and assuming possible political and ideological implications.
