
Teresa Olazabal Cabral
Assistant Professor at the Lisbon School of Architecture, Universidade de Lisboa and Effective Investigator of CIAUD – Centre for Research in Architecture, Urbanism and Design. She graduated in Communication Design from ESBAL – Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa (1991) and has a PhD in Design from the Lisbon School of Architecture, Universidade de Lisboa (2014), with a thesis entitled “Types of success: tradition and contemporaneity in Portuguese letter design (1994-2012)” (Professor Daciano da Costa Merit Award).
Her main areas of interest are Communication Design linked to Culture and the resolution of Social problems, and Typography.
Since 2016, she is also representing the Lisbon School of Architecture at the ORSIES-Observatório de Responsabilidade Social e Instituições de Ensino Superior, a collaborative network under the joint responsibility of the Ministry for Science, Technology and Higher Education and Fórum Estudante, which, among other things, aims to create concrete recommendations for public policies in the field of Social Responsibility versus Higher Education Institutions.
Since 2003 she has been teaching various curricular units in the area of Communication Design at the Lisbon School of Architecture, both at the undergraduate degree in Graphic Design (Graphic Design I, II, III and IV) and at the master’s degree in Communication Design (Communication Design I, II and III, Advanced Typography and Infography) and also at the PhD in Design (since 2016).
She is a member of the the scientific commitee of the IV, V, VI, VIII– XI International Typography Meetings. Organizes, together with Elisabete Rolo and Fernando Moreira da Silva, the VII International Typography Meeting that took place at Lisbon School of Architecture (November 2016) (http://7et.fa.ulisboa.pt ).
Supervisor and co-supervisor of several Master’s dissertations in Communication Design (thirty-one concluded and four in progress), supervisor of PhD thesis (one concluded and three in progress).
She pursued intense professional activity between 1987 and 2009, in the area of Communication Design, mainly in the cultural scope. She developed several projects as a free lancer in the areas of editorial design, visual identity and signage, between 1987 and 2009. From 1990 and 2007 she also worked in the designer José Brandão’s atelier (Atelier B2), having collaborated and co-authored on many projects.
